HVAC Warranty: What Homeowners Need to Know
Understand what your HVAC warranty covers, how to maintain it, and common situations that void coverage.
Your HVAC system came with a warranty, but do you know what it actually covers? Understanding warranty terms helps you avoid unexpected costs and maintain coverage.
Types of HVAC Warranties
Manufacturer warranty covers equipment defects and typically lasts 5-10 years on parts. Some manufacturers offer extended parts warranties of up to 10-12 years if the system is registered within a specified period after installation. Labor warranty is typically provided by the installing contractor and covers the cost of labor to replace warranted parts. PCG Climate provides labor warranties on all installations we perform.
What Warranties Cover
Manufacturer warranties cover defects in the equipment itself -- failed compressors, faulty heat exchangers, defective circuit boards, and similar component failures. They do not cover normal wear items like filters, belts, and capacitors. They do not cover problems caused by improper installation, lack of maintenance, or power surges.
How to Maintain Warranty Coverage
Most manufacturers require annual professional maintenance to maintain warranty validity. Keep records of all maintenance visits. Register your equipment with the manufacturer within the required timeframe. Use qualified technicians for all service and repairs. Do not modify the equipment or void the warranty by bypassing safety features.
Common Warranty Pitfalls
Failure to register the equipment reduces the warranty from 10 years to 5 years with many manufacturers. Skipping annual maintenance voids the warranty if a failure occurs that maintenance could have prevented. Having unqualified individuals work on the equipment voids coverage. Power surge damage is not covered unless a surge protector was installed.
Our Recommendation
Register your equipment immediately after installation, enroll in a maintenance plan to keep annual service documented, and keep all receipts and service records in a folder or digital file. If you need warranty service, PCG Climate handles the process with the manufacturer on your behalf.
