Benefits of Upgrading to a Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat can save 10-15% on heating and cooling costs. Learn the types, features, and which one works with your HVAC system.
If you are still using a manual thermostat that you twist or slide to set the temperature, a programmable upgrade is one of the easiest and most cost-effective improvements you can make to your HVAC system.
How Much Can You Save?
The Department of Energy estimates that a properly programmed thermostat saves 10-15% on heating and cooling costs. For a household spending $2,400 per year on HVAC energy, that is $240-360 saved annually. Most programmable thermostats cost $30-80, paying for themselves in weeks.
Types of Programmable Thermostats
7-day programmable allows different schedules for each day of the week. 5-1-1 programmable uses one schedule for weekdays, separate schedules for Saturday and Sunday. Smart thermostats like Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell offer learning algorithms, Wi-Fi control, and integration with smart home systems.
Setting an Effective Schedule
Set the thermostat back 7-10 degrees during sleeping hours and when the house is empty. In summer, raise the cooling setpoint to 85 degrees while at work and cool to 76 degrees before you return. In winter, lower the heating setpoint to 62 degrees while away and warm to 70 degrees before arrival. Most systems need 30-60 minutes to reach the set temperature, so schedule changes accordingly.
Compatibility
Most programmable thermostats work with standard single-stage heating and cooling systems. If you have a heat pump, multi-stage system, or zoned HVAC, make sure the thermostat supports your configuration. When in doubt, PCG Climate can install and configure the right thermostat for your system.
